"Located less than ten miles from the Bristol Channel and seven miles northeast of Bude in Cornwall, stands the small northwest Devon village of Bradworthy. ... Bradworthy is the center of a large parish district, some 10, 000 acres, which is composed of many old farms and villages. ... As one views the homes, shops and public buildings, Bradworthy appears to have altered little since the middle of the nineteenth century. Several buildings, including the Bradworthy Inn, still wear thatchedroofs. ... In the lower part of the village there is still a village green, a beautiful site with a copper beech and flowering cherry trees. Bradworthy has a clean, simple, and open atmosphere, and original inhabitants are proud to be known as "Horniwinks,1   the parish nickname for individuals born and raised in Bradworthy. Dominating the skyline of Bradworthy is the Parish Church. First constructed in 1198, a small, late Norman building, the church was severely damaged by lightning in 1395; the edifice was rebuilt in 1400, with the west tower added about a century later." "In the latter part of the nineteenth century, ... many ... of the economically deprived residents fo Bradworthy sought new economic opportunities on other continents. The greatest exodus of residents of the United Kingdom to Canada took place in the 1880's when over 240,000 obtained passage across the Atlantic Ocean. The peak years were 1882-1883 when 71,508 emigrants from the British Isles arrived onCanadian soil. Why did they leave the mother country? The phenomenal growth of population after 1800 accompanied by an increasing maldistribution of wealth contributed to periodic agricultural depressions in England. Conditions for rural laborerswere very bad between 1873 and 1883. Other causes for this wave of emigration were the continual introduction of labor-saving devices, immigration propaganda, and letters from friends and relatives already in Canada. The ultimate lure was the potential wheat fields of central and western Canada. Many were Bible Christians, and they migrated either to Australia or Canada."

- this family history also describes Ebenezer Chapel of Bible Christian Church opened 1866 in Darlington Township, with many members from Devon, England - plaque in front of chapel reads: "Perhaps the most fervent of the Methodist sects, the BibleChristian Church was formed in southwestern England in 1815 and established in Upper Canada during the 1830's. Served by itinerant preachers, its small but loyal membership increased gradually, largely among British emigrants from Devon and Cornwall who had settled in rural areas in Northumberland, Durham and Huron counties. ... However, inability to gain support in emerging urban centres and mounting financial difficulties arrested the sect's growth. In 1884 the Bible Christian Church entered into a union with other Methodist bodies."
