Obituary - This week we are called upon to record the death of a former well known resident of this vicinity in the person of the late Elam Butt, which occurred at his late residence in the city of Toronto on Sunday, the 5th inst., at the age of eighty-three years and eight months. The deceased was the second son of the late Elam Butt, Sr., and Ann Dayman Butt, and were well known and highly respected pioneers of Usborne township, where they resided for many years prior to their removal tothe Township of Tuckersmith. The deceased was born in the Township of Darlington, near Port Hope, where his father was a miller for several years. Upwards of seventy years ago the family moved to the Huron Tract and settled on the 2nd concessionof Usborne, where Mr. Butt, Sr., was for several years a member of the council and Reeve of the township. The deceased after attending the public school in Usborne Township, began farming and continued at it for a number of years. He also operatedthe elevator at Kippen for a number of years until he removed to Toronto, where he continued to reside until the time of his death. He is survived by his wife who was formerly Mary McNeil, three grown up daughters, viz., Anne (Mrs. Cuppard) of Detroit, and Alma and Edna, at home in Toronto, one brother, William Butt, of Seaforth, and four sisters, Mrs. J. Dinsdale, Mrs. J.H. Petty, Mrs. E. Taylor and Mrs. John Murdock. Deceased was well informed and took an active interest in public affairs and in politics was a Conservative. He was a member of Zurich Masonic Lodge, No. 224, Hensall, for upwards of forty-five years, and until the time of his death. He was also a member and took an active part in the Orange Order. His funeral was held from his late residence at 26 Pauline Street, Toronto, the services being conducted by the Presbyterian minister and interment was made in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Although he had attained the great age of over fourscore years, he was still bright and active until a short time before his death. He had a jolly, amiable disposition which made him many friends wherever he went and he will be long remembered by those who knew him best for his many admirable qualities of both head and heart.
